Do I Have Views On My Channel After Deleting Videos - Ask David

0:00 If you’d like to know if you get to keep all the views on your videos after you’ve deleted a video with a lot of video views, stay tuned, watch this video as this is for you.

0:23 Hi there, David Walsh here, once again, from DavidWalshOnline.com and in this video I am going to reveal whether you get to keep the video views on your YouTube channel after you’ve deleted a video with a lot of views.

0:36 Now, I’ve got a question from Guiyougirl and she asks “DavidWalshOnline. Hey, I think your videos are really helpful. Just wondering, if you delete a video does it take away the views from it from your total amount. Thank you”.

0:52 Hey Guiyougirl, thank you very much for the question and hopefully I’m not butchering your name and I’ve pronounced it correctly. Now, the answer to your question is Yes and No. And I’m going to go over to the computer, now, and I’m going to show you what I mean by that.

1:08 So, here I am in my channel, and if we look at the top, we can see that I’ve got 3,038,572 views. So, on the outside it looks like I’ve only got 3 million views. Now, if I go into my Analytics. So, I go up to the top, click on the Creators Studio, then click on Analytics, on the side, and if I go down to My Views, here, and from the dropdown, here, I select Lifetime, I get the full amount of views I’ve had on my channel and at the moment it’s 5,475,128.

1:44 Now, the difference is because I have deleted a video and we can see, here, that this is the YouTube URL – what’s left of it- and that got 2.1 million views. And that’s why I have the big difference between my 5.4, here, and my 3.whatever, there. And I’ve also, deleted a few other videos, that’s why there are a couple of hundred thousand missing, as well.

2:10 You can see that if you delete your video, that on the outside, the views won’t be counted or be seen, but on the inside it actually will. And this is where it’s, actually, more important, that if it was deleted from here as well, then there would be a bit of
a problem. So, to answer your question, the answer is Yes and No.

2:31 The same is also, true if I go inside my video and change its Status from Public to Unlisted or Private. So, if your video is not Public, then those views will not be seen on the outside, either. So, you do get to keep those views but it’s on the Analytics side and not externally visible on your channel. So, hopefully, that clears that one up for you.
